Top 5 Up And Coming Companies To Invest In 2014

There is no doubt about the fact that a sizeable chunk of the world population has been touched by the Internet and that people have now gone online for most things like shopping, medical help and even raising funds for start-ups. While this is definitely a positive step in terms of technology advancement, this shift to the online world has done reasonable damage to the offline retail industry comprising of huge retail chains like Wal-Mart (WMT), Target Corp (TGT) and Costco (COST). However, Costco has been above the rest in terms of delivering consistent results because of its robust membership model, high employee morale and effective cost management.

Reasonable Numbers

For the second quarter of 2014, Costco's earnings slid to $1.05 per share from $1.24 per share, a year ago. Though the company's last year earnings were impacted by a $52 million or $0.14 per share tax benefit, the current earnings are still a few notches below the prior-year period. Sales were up by approximately 6% in quarter two on an overall basis and 3% on a comp basis. As management pointed out, the four-week period between Thanksgiving and Christmas saw weak sales as compared to the previous year mainly because of a snowy weather prevalent at that time.

More mREITs stay the course, but two trim payouts
Despite suffering many tumbles and bruises, several mREITs have announced that their dividends will be unchanged from the previous quarter. Several did so last week, and yesterday saw Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) , an agency-only trust, keeping its own $0.70 per sharepayout the same. Hybrid New York Mortgage Trust (NASDAQ: NYMT  ) also kept its dividend stable, at $0.27 per share, in line with its four most recent distributions.

  • [By Zain Zafar]

Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) was one of the worst performers during the period despite following a relatively conservative strategy of investing mostly in adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) mortgage-backed securities, as opposed to fixed-rate 30-year MBSes that can often carry a larger interest rate risk.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Single-family-housing REITHatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) announced yesterday its second-quarter dividend of $0.70 per share, the same rate it's paid for the past two quarters after cutting the payout 12.5% from $0.80 per share.

A great year for mortgage REITs
American Capital Agency went public in 2008, a year that saw other mREITs such as Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) , and Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) enter the territory as well. Groundbreaker Annaly had shown that the carry trade could be lucrative, and the ultra-low short-term interest rate environment created a perfect climate for new companies to enter the playing field.

Most investors don't think of Rayonier Inc. (NYSE: RYN) as a high-tech firm.

This 85-year-old forest products company operates as a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) after being first acquired, then later spun off, by ITT Corp. (NYSE: ITT).

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Even with those unfavorable conditions, though, fellow forest-products REIT Rayonier (NYSE: RYN  ) reported second-quarter sales that more than doubled from year-ago levels thanks to the company's boost in ownership of a joint venture in New Zealand from 26% to 65%. Even excluding those effects, higher sawlog demand in its Gulf of Mexico region and strong export demand for its Pacific Northwest products offset higher logging costs. Those gains were much healthier than what Rayonier experienced in its performance-fibers division, but the company expects to exit the higher-cost portion of that business segment. Rayonier's results set the stage for similar performance from Plum Creek.

Alamy There are plenty of stocks going up -- and down -- in any given week. The gainers inspire us to keep investing. The decliners keep greed in check while reminding us about the risks of the equity markets. Let's go over some of last week's best and worst performers. Pike (PIKE) -- Up 49 percent last week The market's biggest winner of last week was Pike, a specialty construction and engineering firm that received a bid to be taken private. J. Eric Pike -- the firm's chairman and CEO -- is teaming up with private equity firm Court Square Capital Partners to buy out shareholders at $12 a share. It's a fair premium, pricing the buyout at a better than 50 percent premium to where the stock was trading when it was announced. A few attorneys are trying to smoke out investors who feel that the CEO-led privatization push isn't fair, but it's likely to stick at that kind of healthy markup. Pike shares may have traded in the low teens last summer, but that was before revenue and earnings began heading the wrong way. Most shareholders should be more than happy to take the money and run. RadNet (RDNT) -- Up 34 percent last week Operating a network of 251 facilities that perform outpatient diagnostic imaging services is looking good for RadNet. The stock moved sharply higher after a strong quarterly report. Revenue inched slighting higher as MRI and CT scan volume increased modestly during the period. However, the real star in the report was RadNet's bottom line. Its cost-cutting and debt-slashing efforts paid off with net income soaring to $0.12 a share after clocking in at a $0.07 a share a year earlier. Analysts were only holding out for $0.05 a share. RadNet also helped improve its standing by boosting its guidance for all of 2014. You don't need any of RadNet's fancy imaging equipment to see that that's a healthy sign. Trex (TREX) -- Up 25 percent last week It was a good week for a pair of home improvement specialists. Shares of CaesarStone (CSTE) moved 20

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

If you're reading this, then odds are you already know that Cytori Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:CYTX) is up a whopping 8% today. In some ways that's encouraging, as it proves there's a lot of trade-worthy momentum to be tapped. In other ways, however, it's bad, because CYTX is overbought and ripe for a pullback. No matter how you're seeing Cytori Therapeutics in the short run, though, when you take a step back and look at the longer-term picture, there's a lot to like.
