Advisors' Opinion:

The company has a current ROE of 18.18% which is higher than the industry median and the ones exhibited by Legg Mason (LM) and Invesco (IVZ). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking those levels or more, KKR & Co. (KKR), SEI Investments (SEIC) and T. Rowe Price Group Inc. (TROW) could be the option. It is very important to understand this metric before investing and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Gastar Exploration (NYSE: GST) is another Aggressive Portfolio pick made on Dec. 11, and so far it has rallied quite aggressively, producing a three-week capital gain of 26 percent. It helped here too to catch the very bottom of the recent correction, but Gastar has continued to report strong test well results from the Hunton Limestone play it’s pioneering in Oklahoma.

  • [By David Smith]

Earlier, the company had pocketed $75.2 million by selling to Gastar Exploration (NYSEMKT: GST  ) leasehold acreage in Oklahoma's Kingfisher and Canadian counties. It'll obviously require a passel of sales of that magnitude to shore up an overweight balance sheet.

Advisors' Opinion:

We can learn much about the market's conviction during an advance by scanning the sector leadership lists. If Wednesday's pop in stocks was led by defensive consumer staples (XLP), utilities (XLU) and healthcare (XLV), it would have cast serious doubt on the sustainability of the rally. That is not what we saw. The sectors providing leadership after the debt deal was announced were economically sensitive energy (XLE) and financials (XLF). Some big-name investors have mentioned valuations as a driver of interest in energy stocks. From Forbes:

Beaten down small cap home care and infusion stock BioScrip Inc (NASDAQ: BIOS) was recentlycalled apotential takeover target, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with healthcare ETFs like the iShares Dow Jones US Health Care ETF (NYSEARCA: IHF) or the Health Care SPDR ETF (NYSEARCA: XLV).I should mention that during the third quarter of last year, we had BioScrip in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio after the stock hadtaken a beating but we also believed the company is on the verge of turning a profit and is potentially undervalued.

On behalf of most of my clients in 2013, I chose to overweight tech and health care. However, I did so with areas that are traditionally less volatile. I continue to own Powershares Pharmaceuticals (PJP) and/or SPDR Select Healthcare (XLV). I’ve been a proponent of “old tech” with the attractive prices and dividends; First Trust NASDAQ Tech Dividend (TDIV) fits the bill. Additionally, I have remained faithful to iShares Small Cap Value (IJS) for small-cap exposure, rather than hop on the IWO express.
