The good news is that midstream MLPs are already part of the crude-by-rail story and will likely be part of the growing gas-by-rail story. Indeed, there are numerous names in the MLP space with at least some exposure to the crude-by-rail trend, includingEnterprise Products Partners LP(NYSE: EPD), Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP(NYSE: KMP),Genesis Energy LP(NYSE: GEL), andOiltanking Partners LP(NYSE: OILT),among others. Newfield Exploration (NFX) has plunged today after the oil and gas explorer revealed its production targets for 2014 and beyond.

    Associated Press

RTT News has the details on Newfield’s forecast:

Newfield Exploration Co. updated its “three-year plan” and provided additional information. Net production from continuing operations in 2014 is expected to range from 44 – 48 million BOE, or 10% – 20% higher than 2013 estimated net production from continuing operations of approximately 40 million BOE. Domestic liquids production in 2014 is expected to increase 30% over the previous year.

Jefferies’ Subash Chandra and Daniel Braziller offer their take on the announcement:

Company is tightening the previously announced production guidance range. New range is 44-48 mmboe and 48-55 mmboe in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Domestic liquids growth y/y in 2014 is expected at 30%, slightly below prior guidance for 38%. Lower liquids is likely the result of morecapital being deployed in the Cana and slower near-term growth in the Uinta due to refinery maintenance…

2013 production has so far come-in at the high-end of previous guidance, and a similar outcome is possible for 2014-2016. The stock is well positioned from here to outperform, as the market is likely assuming the midpoint of guidance will be achieved. Additionally, the 2013 reserve report is an upcoming catalyst – we believe NFX is an NAV story. On a $95 / $4 price deck, we estimate a 2013 P1 value of $23/shr.

Shares of Newfield have dropped 8% to $24.31 at 3:45 p.m., well below Exxon Mobil’s (XOM) 0.3% gain, Occidental Petroleum’s (OXY) 0.5% rise and Anadarko Petroleum’s (APC) 0.4% dip.

Advisors' Opinion:

Marathon Oil has been doing well for shareholders with the second best performance in the peer group. Anadarko Petroleum (APC), which I have rated as a Sell recently because the share price has run away from its fundamentals, has returned 186% over five years. Marathon Oil achieved 124%, Occidental Petroleum (OXY) 105%, Suncor Energy (SU) 63%, Apache Corp. (APA) 20% and Devon Energy (DVN) 14%. As a value investor with a contrarian tilt I naturally look at underperformers because they often offer the best risk/reward ratio and asymmetric pay-off profiles. I also just recently added to my positions in Devon Energy and Apache Corp. as they are just too cheap to ignore (thesis here and here). Apache was extraordinarily hit on overblown fears of potential oil production interruptions in Egypt and corresponding asset sales.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

    Unrest in your portfolio?
Aside from the fear of higher gas prices, investors might be interested to know what kind of effect this will have on their portfolios. For producers that don't have assets in Egypt, this could potentially provide a little boost because they might get a slightly higher premium for their product. Then again, there are a couple companies that could be hurt by production losses from their Egyptian assets.
