5 Best Industrial Disributor Stocks To Buy For 2014

It is as if the Xbox One mattered to Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) — at least financially. The world’s largest software company boasted it sold two million devices in 18 days. And in a negative note, the supply of Xbox One consoles has gotten low. So much for a huge surge in holiday sales. Whatever happens to the Xbox will have nothing to do with the success of Microsoft. The revenue it generates is so small compared to Microsoft’s big divisions that Xbox One sales are a rounding error.

In the quarter that ended on September 30, Microsoft had total revenue of $18.5 billion and operating income of $6.3 billion. Its Entertainment & Device segment, in which Xbox salesget counted, had revenue of $2.1 billion. Unfortunately, the segment posted a loss of $15 million. The segment also includes sales of other Microsoft hardware. Revenue from Skype, one of the company’s strangest acquisitions, is in there as well. Even if Xbox One is a huge success, the operating income contribution to Microsoft’s overall numbers will be modest, or less than that.

Verizon provides communications products and services through a variety of mediums to consumers and companies around the world. The company is breaking some ground, with plans to publish semi-annual transparency reports starting in early 2014. The stock has been pulling back in recent quarters, but is currently surging higher. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been increasing so investors have been pleased with recent earnings announcements. Relative to its peers and sector, Verizon has been an average year-to-date performer. Look for Verizon to OUTPERFORM.

Of the four Dow stocks that gained today, only Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) advanced significantly, gaining 0.9% after President Obama issued a memorandum asking government agencies to examine wireless spectrums in order to free up space for telecom companies. Verizon would be a major beneficiary if more spectrum is released as it is the nation's No. 1 wireless provider and could build on its advantage with additional spectrum. The company issued a statement commending the president's move, calling it "another positive step toward setting a national spectrum policy."

For a couple of Dow stocks, however, the news wasn't nearly as neutral. AT&T (NYSE: T  ) has plunged more than 5% after disappointing investors with its quarterly report. Overall sales for the telecom giant fell 1.4%, with the wireless segment providing only 3.4% growth. The main problem for AT&T is that rival Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) is seeing faster growth in its Verizon Wireless joint venture. Moreover, Verizon has almost caught up to AT&T in the number of iPhones it sells, and AT&T lags behind Verizon in total smartphone activations. Continuing disappointment could hurt AT&T's future prospects for the rest of the year and beyond, benefiting Verizon further.

As I look at Redbox, for example, we're obviously beginning to roll out Redbox Instant in a broader fashion, along with Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) . We're testing tickets out, and we're putting in some very good CRM and loyalty programs that will roll out in the third and fourth quarters that will continue to extend out that Redbox brand and value; simplicity, convenience, and entertainment.

Lately, though, T. Rowe Price hasn't benefited as much from share-price gains. Competitor Invesco (NYSE: IVZ  ) has managed to expand its margins and produce growth among its current lineup of funds, with exposure to a big range of markets that leaves it broadly placed to serve its customers' needs. But for T. Rowe Price and peer Federated Investors (NYSE: FII  ) , investors haven't been putting as much money to work in their funds as analysts had expected to see, and that has led to some growth shortfalls. Federated in particular missed its earnings estimates in its most recent quarter, and analysts see growth there slowing to just 3%. T. Rowe Price has better prospects, retaining its double-digit revenue growth, but after a substantial move upward at the beginning of the year, its stock has treaded water.

But there are winners–and they’re any stock that’s helped by higher rates. There are mutual fund companies with big money-market fund businesses, who wouldn’t be forced to run these funds for what is essentially free. Federated Investors (FII), for instance, has jumped 2.1% to $27.99. Life insurance companies, too, are rising because they should be able to earn more on their investments. MetLife (MET), for instance, has risen 1.3% to $53.03.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

For money market fund managers, the debt ceiling drama is just the latest in a long series of challenges. Low rates have forced Federated Investors (NYSE: FII  ) , Schwab (NYSE: SCHW  ) , and many other major money market fund managers to subsidize their funds, accepting reduced management fees just to keep their interest rates from going negative. As the graph below shows, fund levels have fallen sharply in response to those low rates as well, hurting fund managers' profitability.

Advisors' Opinion:

The big news for Macy's this quarter has all come from its lawsuit with J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP  ) , in which Macy's argued that Penney shouldn't be allowed to sell a line of home goods from Martha Stewart Living (NYSE: MSO  ) because of a prior contract Macy's had with the home-good producer. Late last month, an appeals court rejected Macy's request to issue a preliminary injunction, instead allowing Penney to sell its JCP Everyday line while the broader lawsuit between Macy's and Penney is outstanding. Both sides finished making their cases on April 23, and with a deadline of May 31 for parties to submit post-trial filings, it'll be a while before Macy's makes its closing arguments and the judge renders a verdict.

    6. Calamos Asset Management (Nasdaq: CLMS) This asset manager's founder and CEO, John Calamos Sr., is a bit vexed right now. As I noted six weeks ago, he had been aggressively buying company stock. He kept doing so in late July and early August, buying more than $1 million more in stock at prices in the $10.50 to $10.75 range. Yet the market pullback has pushed this stock down below $10.

Calamos is in the process of shifting resources away from poorly performing funds and toward higher-performing ones. Recent signs are promising, though it appears as though the firm's founder is the only believer in this turnaround thus far.
