Shares of BlackBerry have plunged 16% in morning trading after the company confirmed it will abandon plans for a sale as it struggles to gain momentum in the smartphone market.

In a statement released Monday, BlackBerry announced it will receive a $1 billion investment from Fairfax Financial Holdings, the company who originally struck a deal to acquire the Canadian smartphone maker. The story was first reported by The Globe and Mail.

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins will step down from his role, replaced on an interim basis by John Chen, who will also serve as the executive chair of the company's board of directors.

FIRST TAKE: BlackBerry deal, no stunner, still perplexes

"BlackBerry is an iconic brand with enormous potential -- but it's going to take time, discipline and tough decisions to reclaim our success," said Chen in a statement. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Canada's largest energy company, Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU  ) gained 10%, and yields about 2.5%. The company has expertise in deep oil sands, which are not known for cleanliness, but it's also investing more heavily in renewable energies. In recent news, pipeline shutdowns due to flooding put a crimpin production. Suncor is vulnerable to possible tightened regulations on pipelines, and its diversification beyond North America.

    What a Fool believes
When Suncor (NYSE: SU  ) , the largest producer of oil sands, is shelving oil sands projects, you know it's hard to make a Loonie in the Canadian oil sands business right now. For investors, there has been very little love on this roller coaster as of late. Hopefully, regions like the Utica will be a good luck charm and will help to resolve some of the operational woes for the region. Then all oil sands advocates will need to do is deal with is find a market that will buy its product. Gulp.

If you’re a regular Investing Daily reader, you likely know that we’ve long been bullish on investing in north of the border. Here are a few reasons why:

Many Canadian firms boast high—and rising—dividends: The best Canadian dividend stocks tend to have long records of making outsized payouts. Right now, for example, our Canadian Edge advisory’s portfolios include stocks with yields up to 10.3%.

Growing resource wealth: Canada’s oil reserves are the world’s third-largest, with production from the Alberta oil sands forecast to double, to 6.7 million barrels a day, by 2030, according to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

The sector got a shot in the arm after Warren Buffett took out a big stake in Suncor Energy (NYSE: SU), the largest oil sands producer, in the second quarter of 2013 and added to his stake in Q3.

“We think it is a positive for the sector,” Robert Bedin of ITG Investment Research recently told the Financial Post. “Suncor is probably a pretty good proxy for the Canadian oil price, and if Mr. Buffett is bullish on the oil price, it’s good across the board for Canadian names.”

Economic stability: The World Economic Forum has ranked Canada’s banking system No. 1 for six years in a row. The country didn’t experience any bank failures during the 2008/2009 crisis.

In addition, Canada’s federal government is on track to balance its books by April 2015. The country’s finance minister, Jim Flaherty, recently said the government plans to post a surplus of C$3.7 billion in the year starting April 2015, up from his earlier projection of C$800 million.

Low corporate taxes: In a recent PwC study, Canada ranked eighth in a global comparison of the most advantageous places to pay corporate taxes, far ahead of the U.S., in 69th spot. The country’s low tax rate—almost half that of the

Advisors' Opinion:

Finally, until the Keystone XL pipeline comes on line -- or gets scrapped, for that matter -- Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  ) will remain the specialist operator in transporting crude oil from Alberta's oil sands. In the last 12 months, the company's stock has risen 16%. The best part? A surge in oil production can easily be accommodated. With Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline rejected by the British Columbia government, Canadian National should enjoy the monopoly in transporting crude for the foreseeable future.

Hence, Canada National Railway (CNI) is under heavy pressure to deliver, under a context aggravated by additional successes. Most importantly, gurus seem to have lost faith on the company, and those with the largest position continue to reduce their holdings.

Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI  )
Canadian National Railway is one company trying to bail-out Canada's ailing pipelines. In 2010 the company didn't move one carload of crude oil. This year it is expected to "choo-choo" its way to 60,000 carloads of oil from the country. This business in particular has boosted sales and income each year since 2010. Investors have to like that growth and where things are headed in the long term. Canadian National is cutting checks totaling $1.9 billion this year to repair its railways, accommodate growth needs, and purchase new freight cars, including new natural-gas powered models.
