Hot US Stocks To Buy Right Now

LONDON -- The FTSE 100 (FTSEINDICES: ^FTSE  ) has so far reversed yesterday's fall, picking up 1.9% to reach 6,401 by 10:25 a.m. EDT. This puts it above last week's close of 6,287, somewhat ironically boosted by weaker European data that strengthened hopes for further stimulative economic policies, with some suggesting even further cuts in interest rates by the European Central Bank.

But which companies are beating the index of top U.K. shares today? Here are three that are doing just that.

ARM
First-quarter results sent ARM Holdings shares up 11.2% to 967 pence after they had been sliding back since the beginning of March. Revenue for the three months to March 31 was 28% higher in sterling terms than in the same period last year, amounting to 170.3 million pounds. With a stronger operating margin of 50.5% (up from 44.5%), normalized pre-tax profit was boosted by 44% to 89.4 million pounds, while earnings per share rose 58% to 5.31 pence.

For the full year, we were told, "ARM has made an encouraging start to 2013 with more leading companies choosing to deploy ARM technology in their products and we therefore expect group revenues for the full-year 2013 to be at least in line with current market expectations."

Advisors' Opinion:

Apache Corporation (NYSE: APA) hits close to home for 24/7 Wall St. because we just identified it as a new entrant in stocks trading under book value. Canaccord Genuity said that it is a Buy with a very high and above-consensus price target of $106 based upon its drilling on overdrive and a restructuring can unlock its value. As a reminder, this one has tanked due to direct exposure to operations inside the troubled nation of Egypt. The $106 price target implies upside of 40% if Canaccord Genuity is correct in its assessment.

The Partners Value Fund Investor Class returned -1.4% in the third calendar quarter, compared to a +1.1% return for the S&P 500 and flat results for the Russell 3000. The largest companies were generally the strongest performers in the third quarter, most notably Microsoft (MSFT) (+12%), Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) (+9%) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) (+4%) for our Fund. Conversely, small cap stocks fell sharply in July and again in September, with the Russell 2000 index finishing down 7.4% for the quarter. While smaller companies account for approximately 10% of our net assets, these stocks drove most of the Fund quarterly decline. Iconix Brand Group (ICON) (-14%), Redwood Trust (RWT) (-14%) and Interval Leisure Group (IILG) (-13%) were the primary small cap detractors. Energy holdings Range Resources (RRC) (-22%) and Apache (APA) (-6%) also impacted results as natural gas and oil prices dropped. We remain optimistic on the long-term outlooks for all five of these stocks, which trade at moderate to large discounts to our business value estimates.

Egypt and its recent troubles have been a Sword of Damocles hanging over Apache (NYSE: APA  ) since the Arab Spring erupted in December 2010. Since then, Egypt has been in a constant state of flux that has led to new leadership and economic struggles. Apache is currently one of the largest leaseholders and producers in the country, and investors' worries regarding the country-specific risks have left the stock trading well below its peer averages.

Hot US Stocks To Buy Right Now: Sprott Physical Gold Trust (PHYS)

Sprott Physical Gold Trust (the Trust) is a closed-end mutual fund trust. The Trust was created to invest and hold substantially all of its assets in physical gold bullion. The Trust seeks to provide an exchange-traded investment alternative for investors interested in holding physical gold bullion. The Trust invests primarily in long-term holdings of unencumbered, fully allocated, physical gold bullion and does not speculate with regard to short-term changes in gold prices. Sprott Asset Management LP (the Manager) is the manager and RBC Dexia Investor Services Trust (RBC Dexia), a trust company, is the trustee of the Trust.

The Trust employs two custodians. The Royal Canadian Mint (Mint) acts as custodian for the Trust's physical gold bullion, pursuant to a precious metals storage agreement between the Manager, for and on behalf of the Trust, and the Mint, to which it refers as the precious metals storage agreement. RBC Dexia acts as custodian of the Trust's assets other than physical gold bullion pursuant to the trust agreement. As of December 31, 2010, the Trust held 90% of its total net assets in physical gold bullion in London Good Delivery bar form. The Trust does not invest in gold certificates or other financial instruments that represent gold or that may be exchanged for gold.

In making investments on behalf of the Trust, the Manager is subject to certain investment and operating restrictions, to which the Trust refers to as the Investment and Operating Restrictions. The Investment and Operating Restrictions provide that the Trust will invest in and hold a minimum of 90% of the total net assets of the Trust in physical gold bullion in London Good Delivery bar form and hold no more than 10% of the total net assets of the Trust, at the discretion of the Manager, in physical gold bullion (in London Good Delivery bar form or otherwise), gold coins, debt obligations of or guaranteed by the Government of Canada or a province of Canada or by the Government of the United St! ates or a state thereof.

The Trust will not purchase, sell or hold derivatives.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Boris Mikanikrezai]

As India and China are the largest buyers of gold, physical demand (PHYS) out of Asia has been moderated in the recent weeks for different reasons.

  • [By Daniel Gibbs]

    Gold trusts and ETFs
One of the easiest ways to profit off of a rising gold price is to buy shares in one of the various exchange-traded gold trusts. These are essentially closed-end funds that own physical gold bullion located in a vault. Each share of the trust represents a fractional ownership share of the physical bullion in the vault. Thus, these trusts could be an easy way to purchase gold exposure directly on an exchange. One example of a trust like this is theSprott Physical Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: PHYS  ) .

  • [By Daniel Cook]

If you are partial to Canadians, or just a little nervous about securing your gold, Sprott Physical Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: PHYS  ) is another viable option. Gold is stored at the Royal Canadian Mint, and I think monthly dusting and shining of the bars is included in Sprott's 0.42% management fee.

Small cap Checkpoint Systems, Inc (NYSE: CKP) fights shoplifting or retail theft and other forms of"shrinkthat costs retailers over $112 billion worldwide last year (according to a study funded by the company), meaning it might be an interesting stock to take a closer look at and to compare its performance with that of SPDR S&P Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: XRT) and PowerShares Dynamic Retail ETF (NYSEARCA: PMR). Just how bad can shoplifting or shrink be for a retailer? Troubled retailer J.C. Penney Company, Inc (NYSE: JCP) has just reported that shoplifting took a full percentage point off the department store chain's profit margins during the quarter. Moreover and given that tens of millions of Americans are now facing higher health insurance costs thanks to Obamacare (which will likely impact consumer discretionary spending),retailerswill need to find ways to shore up their margins and bottom lines by preventingretail theft with solutions from company like Checkpoint Systems.

Plus, following the unsuccessful missile test, it's become clear that more needs to be done to make sure that the U.S. has effective ballistics missile interceptors. That's great news for defense contractors.
