Top 5 Quality Companies To Buy For 2014

Looking for bonds that will hold their own in a period of rising interest rates? I think Ie found a good hiding place in Osterweis Strategic Income (OSTIX).

In my view, the 30-year bull market in bondshich saw yields on ten-year Treasuries fall from a high of 15.8% in September 1981 to a low of 1.4% in July 2012s history. Rates are likely to rise, albeit gradually and with some interruptions, for years to come. Because prices of most fixed-income investments move in the opposite direction of yields, bond investors are sailing into the wind.

What to do? The obvious move is to invest in short-term bond funds. Their bonds come to term quickly so, when rates are rising, investors can frequently reinvest proceeds from maturing bonds in higher-yielding IOUs. The problem is that high-quality short-term bond funds pay virtually zilch. For instance, Vanguard Short-Term Corporate Bond Index ETF (VCSH), an exchange-traded fund, yields all of 1.4%.

That was a big loss, and the stock price immediately began to tumble. Approximately two hours before markets closed on Thursday, CYS had lost 4.33%. Not only that, but it was dragging fellows Annaly (NYSE: NLY  ) , American Capital Agency (NASDAQ: AGNC  ) , Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) , and hybrid Two Harbors (NYSE: TWO  ) down, as well. Interestingly, Western Asset stayed green, despite its downgrade one day earlier.

First up is Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB), the $2.2 billion hotel owner with 14 hotels under its umbrella. The firm started off the year rallying hard, climbing more than 14% from the start of January to early March. Since then, shares have been slugging sideways. But the sideways moves are laying the framework for a second rally leg in PEB this May. Here's how to trade it:

Pebblebrook is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $35, and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as PEB bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer to a breakout above that $35 price ceiling. When that breakout happens, we've got a buy signal.

Momentum adds some confidence to the staying power in PEB's eventual breakout -- 14-day RSI has been making higher lows since early February, well before the triangle pattern started forming in Pebblebrook's price. That said, it's crucial to wait for this stock to catch a bid above $35 before putting cash in the trade.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Small-cap hotel investment REIT Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB) is setting up a similar pattern to the one in EXR -- with a few exceptions.

PEB isn't forming an ascending triangle; support isn't in the same sort of uptrend in this stock. Instead, PEB is forming a rounding pattern with resistance at $28. Rounding patterns look just like they sound -- they indicate a shift in control from sellers to buyers. While this setup is most common as a "bottoming" pattern, PEB's price action doesn't change the implications if shares can break out above $28. That's our buy signal.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles, rectangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That resistance line at $28 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.

All told, Monsanto,DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) ,andSyngenta (NYSE: SYT  ) control 53% of the world's seed production, yet their control of our food supply is almost all-encompassing, because theycross-licensetheir technology between themselves and with other companies.

Chemical giant E.I. du Pont de Nemours (NYSE: DD  ) lost 2.2% today as a Bank of America analyst downgraded the stock from buy to neutral. Here, DuPont is somewhat a victim of its own success: With the stock's solid performance thus far this year, there aren't many visible catalysts on the horizon justifying that continued trend. The downgrade even said broad economic growth would be needed to justify a buy rating, which, according to the IMF, seems pretty unlikely.

Chemical giant E.I. du Pont de Nemours (NYSE: DD  ) was one of the 26 Dow decliners today, losing 2%. Even though the stock offers an impressive 3.4% dividend, Wall Street wasn't swayed by that large income distribution today. DuPont and Monsanto are currently the two biggest players in genetically modified seeds, the controversial technique that has come to dominate agriculture in recent years. Ninety-three percent of soybeans, for example, were planted with genetic modifications this year.

Before we hit the Dow losers, let's look at the index's big winner of the week: DuPont (NYSE: DD  ) , which ended the week higher by 7.54% after gaining 4.13% on Tuesday alone. The big move came as the result of DuPont's Q1 results, in which it matched expectations on revenue, beat estimates on earnings per share, and raised its dividend by 5%. The company also reaffirmed its 2013 full-year forecast, which is 2% to 7% higher than what DuPont posted in 2012.
